This file contains information that was not available when the manuals went to press. It contains instructions for updating to Finale 3.2.1, information new to Finale 3.2.1 and updates to the manuals. Please read this file before you begin working with Finale 3.2.1, and print a copy of it to keep with your Finale manuals. It is set up in the following sections:
Please read this entire section before updating Finale 3.2. Updating to Finale 3.2.1 consists of updating the Finale application as well as some Finale files.
The Finale 3.2.1 Updater will allow you to update Finale 3.2 to version 3.2.1. The Finale 3.2.1 maintenance update is available at no charge to original purchasers of Finale 3.2 for Macintosh.
Before you run the Updater, remove or disable any virus protection software you are using. We've taken extensive precautions to ensure that your copy of Finale is virus-free; as long as you reinstall the virus software after you've updated to Finale 3.2.1, you should have no problems.
To disable the virus protection software, move it out of your System Folder into another folder temporarily and then Restart your Macintosh. After using the Finale 3.2.1 Updater, make sure that you re-enable the virus protection: drag it from its temporary location back into your System Folder and Restart your Macintosh.
Remember that this updater ONLY works on version 3.2.
• Double-click on the Finale 3.2.1 Updater (located in the Finale 3.2.1 • Updater • folder). A dialog box appears asking you to select the file to update.
• Select the Finale 3.2 application.
• Once you have selected the appropriate version, click "Update". A new version, Finale 3.2.1 for Macintosh, will be created and installed on your hard drive. Your original version of Finale will remain intact as well. After you run Finale 3.2.1, you should throw away the older version of Finale.
IMPORTANT: If you receive an error message when running the updater, or do not have version 3.2 installed on your drive:
• Locate your original Finale 3.2 Install disks.
• Re-install the application (you do not need to install any other items).
• Follow the previous steps to update the newly installed Finale to version 3.2.1.

• Read Me - contains information about Finale 3.2 and Finale 3.2.1 that you may want to refer to at a later time
To update these files, simply select these files in the Finale 3.2.1 • Updater • folder, then drag them into your Finale 3.2 folder. A message will appear asking you to confirm that you want to replace the files. Click OK. The files are copied into your Finale 3.2 folder.

Finale 3.2.1 contains the following minor enhancements and corrections to Finale 3.2.
• You can control the distance between multiple hyphens that appear between lyric syllables with the new "Space Between Hyphens" setting in the Notation Options dialog box. The Notation Options dialog box was rearranged to accommodate this new option. Hint: If you only want a single hyphen to appear between syllables, set this value to a large distance such as 12 inches.

• The page sizes in the Compile PostScript Listing dialog box now include the A4 and B5 page sizes.

• Default whole rests are centered between barlines (regardless of the front and back separations in the Music Options dialog box).
• The following Speedy Entry commands now work correctly: Option-Shift-L, Option-L; Option-plus (+), Option-minus (-) now work correctly on the main keypad as well as the numeric keypad.
• In some older files, the key signature of A-flat minor appeared as C-flat minor. To correct this, Finale now stores the information on major and minor key signatures in the application, rather than in the music files.
• Cautionary clef changes now appear after you apply Alternate Notation (Mass Edit menu) to a region.
• Cautionary clef changes at the end of systems now appear according to the "Display cautionary clef..." setting in the Document Options dialog box.
• Flagged rests are now positioned correctly when you switch the default music font in the Data Check dialog box from the Sonata font back to Petrucci.
• All fonts now appear in the Type Style dialog box for ETF's created in Finale 3.0 for Windows.
• Fixed the Undo command for editing lyrics. If you choose Undo after editing a lyric in the Edit Lyrics window, only the edits you made on the last lyric displayed will be undone.
• Note-based slurs are placed correctly on whole note chords with seconds, and on notes with the stem length set to zero (Music Options dialog box or Special Tools).
• Fixed the following Smart Shape printing problems: measure-based smart shapes and "hooks" on 8va markings occasionally missing on printout, and trills overprinting.
• Fixed problems with the "Abbreviate common time..." and "Abbreviate cut time..." checkboxes (Document Options dialog box). The status of the checkbox inappropriately affected music rebarring and hyphen placement between lyric syllables.
• All text now appears on printouts of text blocks set to full justification.
• Fixed a low memory problem in the Compile PostScript Listing dialog box where the compilation would run out of memory and freeze.
• Fixed a problem with the "Remove Deleted Items" option in the Data Check dialog box where it wouldn't advance through the staves or frames.
• The About Finale dialog box appears in color on machines running more than 256 colors.
Note for System 7.5 users: Finale will not print with QuickDraw GX enabled.
Along with the corrections to the Finale application, the Finale Default File was also modified.
• Some chord suffixes such as "m" for "minor," were improperly defined in the Finale Default File. This caused incorrect fretboards to appear on some chords. The suffixes have been corrected, and will now display the correct fretboard.
• The new "Space Between Hyphens" setting in the Notation Options dialog box has been set to 12 inches. With this default setting, only one hyphen will appear between lyric syllables under normal circumstances. If you want multiple hyphens to appear, change this setting to the distance you want to appear between the hyphens. For example, if you want the hyphens spaced 1/2 inch apart, change this setting from 12 (inches) to .5 (inches).
• A new command named “German Spelling” in the Chord menu lets you switch to the German style of spelling chords. A root of “B” is spelled “H” and a root of “B flat” is spelled “B.”

• In the Select Default Fonts dialog box a new item named “Fretboards” appears in the Other Items popup menu. This allows you to control the size of the guitar fretboards you can display using Finale’s Chord menu. (You can also change the font, however, you may get unexpected results. We recommend using Seville since it was specifically designed to run with Finale.)

• In the Music Options dialog box, look for two new text boxes named “Space Between Accidental and Note” and “Space Between Accidentals on Notes.” These new global settings control the distance of accidentals to note heads and the distance between multiple accidentals on notes, respectively.

• In the Music Characters dialog box, you’ll find a new text box named “Stem Offset.” This value should be changed ONLY if you’re using an alternate music font such as Sonata.

A new “All Files” radio button appears in the Open dialog box. Select this radio button to display all files, regardless of type, in the current folder. This will allow you to open MIDI files and ETF’s that have been transported from another platform.

Choose Print Parts (or Compile PostScript Listing to compile parts) from the File menu to display the new Format Parts dialog box which gives you more control over the quick printing of parts. This method provides a more functional layout of parts when you need to generate parts quickly.
Note that if you choose Print Parts from Page View, all parts in the score will be printed. However, if you choose Print Parts from Scroll View only the staves displayed in Scroll View (in the current Staff Set) will be printed.
HINT: If you only want a few staves to print, program and select a Staff Set that contains only the staves you want to print. Make sure that you’re in Scroll View, then choose Print Parts from the File menu. Finale will only print the staves in the current Staff Set.
When Finale 3.2 displays the Format Parts dialog box, it automatically gathers the settings from the first page of your score (as displayed in the Page Layout window). It then uses these settings for the first page of the printed parts. The remaining page layout settings are drawn from the Default Page Format dialog box.
The settings that appear in the Format Parts dialog box work the same as the settings in two of Finale’s existing dialog boxes; they include:
• Multi-Measure Rest
Use these settings to specify the appearance for the multi-measure rest that will appear in the parts. (See “Extracted Part: Measure Rest Definition dialog box” in Finale Reference, page 114-115 for details.)
• First System Drop • First System Indent • First Page Drop
Displays the First System Drop, First System Indent and First Page Drop values from the first page (Page Layout window). Use these settings to control the placement of the Title (and other headers) and the first system of music on the first page of each part. (See “Alternate Page Format for Parts dialog box” in Finale Reference, page 34-36 for details.)
If you do not want to use the settings gathered from the first page, enter new values. For example, if you do not want the first system indented in your printed parts, simply enter zero (0) in the First System Indent text box.
• Top Staff
Displays the placement of your topmost staff in Scroll View for the placement of staves in your printed parts. (See “Alternate Page Format for Parts dialog box” in Finale Reference, page 34-36 for details.)

Use the new Page Size popup menu in the Compile PostScript Listing dialog box to select the page size. The Max Height and Max Width values now appear in the current measurement unit (formerly shown in points only).

When entering or editing music with Speedy Entry, Shift-delete provides the same function as the Clear key. This key combination was added for PowerBook owners who do not have a Clear key on the keyboard.

The “Clear Manual Positioning” option is ignored when you choose the Apply Note Spacing command (Metatool 4). Note Spacing always clears any manual dragging you’ve done with the Speedy Entry or Special Tools tools.
The Music Spacing Metatools, Metatools 3 and 4, now respace the music according the settings in the Music Spacing Options dialog box.
